The ZHAW Ecotechnology Research Group focuses on sustainable natural resource use, emphasizing closed water and nutrient cycles. Our work integrates ecological engineering principles to develop innovative solutions, particularly in wastewater treatment and reuse.
Our research is grounded in the principles of ecological engineering, a discipline that draws from ecology to solve environmental challenges. We employ systems thinking and an engineering approach to develop technologies and concepts that align with the ideas of circular economy and nature-based solutions. This involves innovative strategies for water reuse, nutrient cycling, and biomass utilization, emphasizing the reduction and elimination of pollutants.
One of our lighthouse project is the so called KREIS-Haus in Feldbach, Switerland, which is a living lab that exemplifies nearly closed water and nutrient cycles in an inhabited model house. On an international level, the water and energy self-suffiencient laundromat “LaundReCycle” in Cape Town, South Africa is one of our flagship projects.
These initiatives, demonstrate that our impact goes beyond advancing academic knowledge, we're demonstrating practical, scalable solutions for a sustainable future, with a particular emphasis on water resource management.
